Do you stand in front of your closet and look at items that you know in your heart that you will never wear? If you are like most women, you probably have several (dozen) items that you bought because you LOVED them, but to this day, even though you’ve tried them on a few (hundred) times, you just can’t quite find the time or place to wear them. Sound familiar? Don’t worry – you are not alone.
So why, we ask, do men not go through this? Well for a few reasons. First of all, men do care about what they wear, but they aren’t wearing 4-6 inch heels. Most of their shoes are comfortable and easy to walk in. Their pants don’t hug every curve (or emphasize every bump), and they don’t really have to worry that a friend might have seen them in that suit at another event. Not to say that men get away with everything, but their issues with clothing are different than ours. Lucky guys! (Of course we absolutely cannot condone wearing your pants up to your chest or socks with sandals – but that’s a whole different column.)
The late Nora Ephron wrote a great book about aging “I Feel Bad About My Neck” and how women deal with all of the trials and tribulations of getting older. Fashion and our wardrobe are two of those issues. Gravity is a b**ch.
Truth be told, women today are aging much better than generation before us. We run to the gym, to our Pilates, yoga, boxing and whatever class to reverse the pull of gravity and for the most part it helps. We eat less processed foods, stay out of the sun and bath in moisturizer. But it still won’t make that item in your closet that you probably should have never bought look great. So, maybe it’s time to do a cleanse.
At eDesigner Resale, we have become the therapists of those closet break-ups. Women come to our store, torn because although they really want to keep things status quo, but the item still doesn’t fit, it’s too short, too long, too tight, too loose or just really doesn’t look quite right. Or the shoes look great – if you can be carried into the restaurant and never have to go through the pain of actually trying to walk in them.
When our clients bring in something for consignment that they are unsure about, we make them put it on and offer advice on how they can make it work. We can refer a tailor, or help them coordinate something that might pull it together, but if it’s a no-go, we nicely let them know that as well, and try to come up with something that will make the break up a bit easier (kind of like a rebound outfit). That’s one of the pluses of having in-house stylists. And perhaps can help you make chicken salad out of …
As one of our clients wrote recently, “the ladies operating the boutique are stylish, sometimes too honest, with class, taste and an incredible eye for clothing that is complementary for you. What every lady needs to know is answered here. What to keep, recycle, accessorize, slenderize and accentuate. Visiting eDesigner Resale is a group practice to present you to a brand new you.” (Thanks Phyllis!)
